Painting in the Studio this Morning

Comments (0) a painting a day, art, arte, caridad barragan, custom oil paintings, umbria, umbria italy, wedding painting italy, wedding paintings

One of the things that I like about Autumn and the changes of the season are the shorter days and low laying light.  Sure, this means I have less time to paint using this light but it also means that I can intensify the time I spend painting.  So I bundle up and open my studio windows to get lots of fresh air since I’m using oil paints.

This morning I’m working on a wedding commission for a client in the US.  I’ll be able to show it to you later as it’s a surprise for their spouse.

Have you got any questions about painting commissions or my event painting services here in Italy? Go ahead and leave a comment below, I’ll get back to you soon.

Caridad Barragan on Verni.io

Comments (0) Senza categoria

Verni.io is a different artist website.  Up until now, art platforms worked like virtual art galleries where artists could showcase their work and the platform would take a fee from any sales made through them.  These platforms have gotten big, clogged up and well, it’s difficult to get found.

Verni.io has other ambitions.  It seeks to connect collectors and artists not just virtually but having potential collectors visit the artist’s studio and buy directly from them.  So let’s say you’re visiting a major city or perhaps a farm town (us artists like the boonies!).  You can log on to verni.io, enter your location to see which artists are near you, contact them and ask to visit they’re studio.  It’s as easy as that.

I find this approach humanizing and a great way to meet local artists or international artists like me in their own personal creative space.  So if you’re an artist and you’d like to connect with potential collectors, I suggest you join this fun platform.

I’m on Verni as Caridad Barragan  so if you’re passing through Umbria on your way to Rome or Florence, I’m just 15 minutes away from the nearest autostrada exit, get in touch with me through the platform and come up for a cuppa coffee or tea and visit my studio.

Looking forward to meeting you!

Monday is Paintbrush Day

Comments (0) Senza categoria

Schermata 2015-09-07 a 12.05.14

Good morning, it’s Monday the paintbrush day!  NEVER throw out a paintbrush.  Eventhough it’s old and frayed, it may still be useful for some other job.  I like to use mine for spreading glue, applying primer to rough surfaces or to add a particular texture.  Besides, old paintbrushes are indicators of time, like the rings of a tree trunk.  I remember one of my professor Joachim Smith at Cal. State Fullerton once told us, “your brushes are your best friends, treat them well and they will last a lifetime”.  This is exactly what I do.

What do you do with your old brushes?  Leave me a comment below.

“Alla Prima” A Contemporary Guide to Traditional Direct Painting

Comments (0) Senza categoria

I came across Al Gury‘s book by chance one day as I was browsing “alla prima painting” on the internet.

It seemed like a wonderful book to have and once I received it in the mail I was even more surprised to see that the images and explanations were genuinely informative and beautiful.

I really enjoyed the step by step images along with the color palettes of famous direct painters. This is one of those books that you’ll never get tired of looking at.

Whether you’re a
seasoned painter or simply appreciate painting, this book helps you to
further understand the complex process of developing an alla prima
painting.

Picnic&Painting at Carsulae in Umbria, Italy

Comments (0) Senza categoria

Having lived in Umbria for 9 years, I’m almost embarassed to say that I had never visited the archeological area of Carsulae.

So when my friend Francesca* invited me for a picnic late last summer, I simply couldn’t refuse. I packed my easel, paints and some munchies and headed for the hills around Terni, Italy.

It’s one of the most impressive archeological sites in Italy and dates back to around 300 B.C.

There’s a beautiful arch, amphitheater, Roman baths and the Church of S.Cosima and Damiano and walking the grounds you get the feeling of walking through history.

I took advantage of the warm weather and painted the ruins and the surrounding hill.

Later in the afternoon there was an Italian folk musica gathering and we had the lovely surprise of listening to various groups from all over Italy.

If you visit Umbria, please don’t miss out on this enchanting place.

What: Roman ruins & music festival
When: from Spring to Autumn
Where: San Gemini exit off the E45 highway
Cost: €5 entrance gets you inside the site and museum.

For more info regarding opening hours and events at Carsulae click here: http://www.carsulae.it/home.php?lang=eng
